West Geauga seniors Nikki Luciano and Abby Komar hope to get their team lots of wins this season. And if new head coach Frank Ricco needs help with any of the team’s statistics, Komar and Luciano should be able to help.

Both want to teach math after high school.

They are also close friends.

“It’s been really good,” Luciano said of practice this season. As of last week, the Wolverines had yet to play a game, with all of April’s wet weather. But the end of April and May will be busy.

Luciano is a catcher and middle infielder and will play softball at Notre Dame College next year, where she hopes to major in education and teach high school math.

“I love catching, but middle infield is more fun,” she said.

Luckily for her, Komar thinks Luciano is more valuable to the team in the middle infield.

But she said it’s been tough practicing indoors most days.

“We can kind of get annoyed with ourselves being in here all the time,” she said, standing in West Geauga’s high school gym, the Wolvarena. “We’d like to get outside and get some fresh air.”

Komar will pitch this season for the first time. Adding to that challenge is the fact that she missed all of last year with a broken finger, the ring finger of her left hand.

She said she feels 100 percent this year.

And both seniors think the team’s mindset is strong.

“The girls really respect us, and I respect that,” Luciano said. “I love being their teammate and leading by example with Abby.”
