Arrests were made early Monday morning in a 2006 unsolved homicide in Burton Township.
On May 26, 2006, Daniel Ott, 31, was shot and killed inside of the home he was renting at 16058 Claridon-Troy Road. A man wearing a black ski mask and camouflaged hunting clothes, and armed with a shotgun entered Ott’s unlocked home.
Ott’s 35-year-old girlfriend, Maryann Ricker, called 9-1-1 about 6:40 a.m. to report the incident.
Ricker told Geauga County Sheriff’s Office detectives that she was sleeping on the floor of a first-floor bedroom and Ott on a mattress next to her on the floor when they were awakened at about 6:30 a.m. by the shotgun-wielding intruder.
The intruder bound Ott’s wrists together with duct tape and told Ricker to remain face down on the floor.
Ott apparently managed to free himself from the tape and began to scuffle with the masked intruder. He eventually was shot in the chest.
Ott was transported to UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced death.
Three people were arrested Monday, WKYC TV Channel 3 reported, according to information from the U.S. Marshal’s Service. Two suspects are from Ohio, one is from out-of-state, the station reported.
In 2006, based on Ricker’s initial description, the intruder was about 5-foot-10 with a medium build, and fled in a maroon Ford after the shooting.
Ott, who was from Vermilion, had been employed at the neighboring Urban Growers Greenhouse for three years. He was getting ready to move, however, to Michigan, Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland said during a 2006 press conference.
