Donkey & Mule Assoc. Meets

July 30, 6:30 p.m.

The Donkey & Mule Association of the Western Reserve will meet at the Middlefield Library, 16167 East High St. The public is welcome.

Guest speaker Mike Peplowski, DVM, of Big Creek Veterinary Hospital, will discuss health issues of donkeys and mules.

Food Pantry Open

July 31, 10 a.m. to noon

The food pantry at Chester Christian Center A/G Church is open to anyone who is in need of food. One does not need to be a member of the church to come to the food pantry.

Canning 101

Aug. 8, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Ohio State University Extension and the Geauga County Farm Bureau will present Canning 101 at the Patterson Center 14269 Claridon-Troy Road at the Patterson Center in Burton on the fairgrounds.

Beth Stefura, extension educator for Mahoning County, will discuss all aspects of food preservation, including canning and freezing in the demonstration kitchen.

The class is free and open to the public thanks to support of the Farm Bureau.

Additionally, OSU-E will be testing pressure gauges through Sept. 11. Owners can bring in their lid any time during regular Extension hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and will be called for pickup and the results. Gauges must be labeled with the owner’s name and phone number.

Church Hosts Clothing Swap

Aug. 1, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Morning Star Friends Church is holding a family clothes swap at the church located at 12550 Ravenna Road in Chardon. The shopping day provides families the opportunity to get rid of clothes they no longer need and replace them with new-to-them clothes for free. One does not have to give clothes to receive clothes.

Community Day Picnic

Aug. 1, 12-5 p.m.

Munson Township’s annual Community Day Picnic will be held, rain or shine, at the Munson Township Park, 12641 Bass Lake Road. A fun day is planned for the entire family with a picnic lunch, music, Euclid Beach rocket car rides, magic of Rick Smith Jr. Enterprises, raffles, games and activities.

Ledgewood Barbecue Festival

Aug. 1, 4:30-7:30 p.m.

The men of the Ledgewood Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will host their 15th community barbecue on the grounds of the church located at 8261 Kinsman Road in Russell Township, just west of Route 306. Menu includes barbecue ribs, pulled pork, chicken, corn, baked beans, potato salad and ice cream sundaes.

Tickets are $13 for individuals 10 and older, $6 for children 5-10 years and free for children under 5. Dinner is eat-in or takeout.

Geauga Dems Steak Roast

Aug. 1, 5:30 p.m.

The Geauga County Democratic Party will hold its annual steak roast at the Geauga County Democratic Party Headquarters and Social Hall, 12420 Kinsman Road in Newbury. Option of chicken is available by request.

A cash bar will be available for members. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m.

Next Step Reverse Raffle

Aug. 1, 7-11 p.m.

Geauga County Kiwanis clubs are holding a reverse raffle at Middlefield Sale Barn on Nauvoo Road, Middlefield. Grand prize is $4,000.

Tickets are $125 per couple and $75 per person and are available at Middlefield Bank in Newbury (ask for Kathy) or from any Geauga Kiwanis Club member.

Come for fun, food and prizes. Cash bar with beer and wine available.

Molly Goes to War

Aug. 5, 2 p.m.

Hamlet Village in Chagrin Falls is hosting the first of two summer history series on Chagrin Falls history, with Chagrin Falls Historical Society speakers.

Laura Gorretta will present a program highlighting information and letters that the Molly Chittenden Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution sent to Chagrin Falls men and women during World War II.

The talk is illustrated with photographs of service men and women from the collections of the Chagrin Falls Historical Society, painting a picture of life in the Village during that time.

Gorretta is a member of DAR and the author of the book, Chagrin Falls, an Ohio Village History.

This program is free and open to the public, and held in Hamlet Clubhouse, 324 Hamlet Hills Drive, Chagrin Falls. Call Karen 440-247-7715 to reserve.

Crop Walk Meeting

Aug. 5, 6 p.m.

All church groups, civic organizations and individuals interested in fighting world hunger are invited to an organizational meeting for the 2015 Greg Weemhoff Crop Walk in Geauga County. Come to the Claridon Congregational Church at state Route 322 and Claridon-Troy Road.

Following a light supper, there will be a short presentation and distribution of materials for the event, which takes place at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 27, starting at the grandstand at the fairgrounds in Burton.

Twenty-five percent of the funds raised will be donated to the Geauga Hunger Task Force, while the remaining 75 percent will go to Church World Service, an ecumenical humanitarian organization focused on providing people with food and clean water.

Concert in the Park

Aug. 5, 7-9 p.m.

Don Wojtila Band will be performing at the bandstand in Chester Township Parkside Park. The group of professional musicians plays a wide variety of musical selections and is well known in the Cleveland ethnic community for its polkas. Vocalist Christine Hibbs, of Chester, has won numerous awards.

Presented by the West Geauga Kiwanis Club in conjunction with the Chester Township Park Commission. Sponsored by Nolan Maintenance and Berkshire Hills Golf Course.

In event of rain, concert will be moved to Mayfield United Methodist Church, 7747 Mayfield Road, Chester Township.

VFW Chinese Auction

Aug. 8, 12-3 p.m.

The Chardon VFW Ladies Auxiliary will host a Chinese auction at the VFW Post 6519, 752 Water St., located across from Sage’s Apples. The auction features more than 100 items.

Civic Club Ox Roast

Aug. 8, 12:30-6 p.m.

The fourth annual Community Ox Roast sponsored by the Bainbridge Civic Club will be held at Centerville Mills Park, 8558 Crackel Road in Bainbridge. There will be entertainment throughout the day, including a bounce house and carnival games for children, music, various Kenston organizations, police and fire department information booths and other surprises.

Proceeds benefit Bainbridge Area Food for Friends and the club’s Kenston High School Scholarship Fund.

Kids Play and Learn Day

Aug. 8, 1-4 p.m.

United Way is celebrating the joy of reading at the Metzenbaum Center, 8200 Cedar Road, Chester Township. While kids are busy reading to therapy dogs, getting their face painted or participating in crafts, parents will have time to learn about resources available to families in Geauga County.

Performers from the Geauga Lyric Theatre Guild will be there, along with a special appearance of Elsa from the Disney movie “Frozen.”

Parents with children younger than 5 years old can complete a learning checkup to make sure they are on track for the knowledge and skills needed for kindergarten. Agencies will be on hand to answer questions about appropriate milestones and early learning experiences for children.

A free book will be given to each child. Adults can learn about tutoring and mentoring opportunities throughout the county.

Chardon Polka Band

Aug. 9, 9:30 a.m.

Come join the Chardon Polka Band as it leads a worship service at Celebration Lutheran Church, 10621 Auburn Road in Chardon.

Following the worship service, the band will present a free concert at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Members of the congregation will provide a picnic lunch for those in attendance.

Bring a lawn chair if attending the worship service and/or the concert.

Girl Scout Recruitment

Aug. 11, 6-9 p.m.

Join Girl Scouts of North East Ohio at Observatory Park, 10610 Clay St., in Montville Township, for an evening among the planets and stars.

Representatives from Girl Scouts of North East Ohio will be on hand to answer questions and to help register girls for the 2016 scouting year.

The program includes a naturalist-led planetary trail hike, planetarium shows, human orrery and continuous games and crafts.

Flea Market On The Greens

Aug. 15, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Chesterland Historical Village hosts the annual Flea Market on the Greens, rain or shine, with 100 vendors featuring antiques and treasures galore.

In addition to food and music, the Oak Shackle Forge Trading Co. will have its forge set up and the Western Reserve Day Lily Society returns.

The village is located on the corner of Caves and Mayfield roads in Chester Township.

Parking is free. A $2 gate fee for adults benefits the many programs offered by the historical village throughout the year.

Hybrid Daylily Sale

Aug. 15, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Western Reserve Daylily Society will hold its daylily hybrid plant sale, rain or shine, at the Chesterland Historical Village Flea Market at the corner of Caves and Mayfield roads in Chester Township. Flea market admission is $2.

In addition to rare hybrids from Moldovan Gardens, the Society will offer other varieties of hybrids available for sale on a first-come, first-served basis.

The sale includes unique bare-root plant divisions that are affordably priced and ready for planting on a first-come, first-served basis. Quantities of each cultivar are limited.

Barbecue Chicken Dinner

Aug. 15, 4:30-7 p.m.

Newbury American Legion and Auxiliary Post 663 is hosting a barbecue chicken benefit dinner for veterans in need in the Hunter Pavilion behind the Post located at 11008 Kinsman Road in Newbury Township.
