Chardon 24 — West Geauga 6
The Hilltoppers ran out, literally with 114 yards on the ground, to a 24-0 lead over West Geauga in the first half. The Wolverines lost a key player on offense and defense to injury, and did not appear to have much depth. With Chardon’s Tommy Benenati under center, and a number of options at half-back and fullback, the ‘Toppers won this heated rivalry. Now in 44 games between the two schools all-time, the series is tied 22-22.
NDCL 41 — South 35
A huge Week 1 for the Lions under new head coach Andrew Mooney.
Kirtland 24 — Chagrin Falls 9
The Hornets win their 56th consecutive home game and prove that despite their size, Kirtland continues to take on all-comers. Chagrin Falls offensive struggles continue dating back to last season.
Pymatuning Valley 34 — Newbury 15
The Black Knights led this game until just before half-time when the Lakers scored to make it 18-15 and never looked back.
Harvey 49 — Berkshire 42
This game went back-and-forth all night. Gordy Cossick appears set to throw it a lot this season. The Badgers have a very strong showing against a much larger school.
Hawken 28 — Western Reserve Academy 20
The Hawks start off the season strong with a home win against recent private school rival WRA. Logan Lair scored the game-sealing TD. It’s good to see the senior back on a football after last season’s injury.
Garfield 47 — Cardinal 14
The Huskies drop a crucial opener. The Huskies were shut out the first three quarters.
Kenston 6 — Amherst Steele 3
The Bombers gut out a Week 1 win over a new addition to the schedule. Tough win despite a 90-minute bus ride.
