In an effort to bolster the sport, Feb. 20 is “Try Hockey for Free” day across the United States, and The Pond Ice Rink, 9999 E. Washington Street, Chagrin Falls, will host an event for children ages 4 to 9.
It’s the sixth consecutive free hockey event held by Geauga Youth Hockey has hosted in the past three years.
“This event is one-of-kind, affording children an opportunity to experience youth hockey for the very first time,” according to a news release. “It’s a chance to get physically active, try something new and learn about the greatest sport on ice.”
In November, the event was held in 48 states and introduced over 12,000 boys and girls to the sport.
The Feb. 20 event will be from 3:10 to 4:10 p.m. and players must pre-register at www.tryhockeyforfree.com.
Participants must bring a helmet — bike, ski, hockey, lacrosse — winter gloves and athletic clothing.
The event is a part of “Hockey Across America Weekend.” Feb. 19 is “Wear your Hockey Jersey” day. And Feb. 21 is “Celebrate a Local Hockey Hero Day.”
The Geauga youth Hockey Association has been recognized for its program, and the GYHA collaborates with the Lake Erie Monsters and the five local high school varsity hockey teams.
