CFMS to Host 2017 NFPA Competition
Chagrin Falls Middle School will host the 2017 National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) Competition in partnership with Parker Hannifin. This competition, led by Chagrin Falls high school and middle school science teacher Alison Hinesman, engages students in the study of fluid power, engineering and careers which use fluid power.
Teams of eighth-grade students from Chagrin Falls and Kenston School gathered on Jan. 13 for workshop day. The workshop day allowed the teams to learn about fluid power by building a pneumatic lifter and develop skills they will need for the competition. At the end of the day, the students took their tools back to their home schools and worked on their challenge scenario and design, a portfolio, as well as building and testing a prototype for their fluid power mechanisms.
On March 10, challenge day, the teams will use the same tools and an identical kit of supplies to recreate their unique mechanisms, which they use in the competition to pick up weighted objects and place them on a platform. Teams will be graded in a number of areas, including total points, portfolio ideas, design and teamwork.
Last year, Chagrin Falls Middle School was a pilot school for the NFPA Competition. Due to its success, Kenston School was added to the competition this year.
“We are incredibly excited to grow this year’s program to also include Kenston Schools,” said Becky Quinn, Chagrin Falls director of curriculum and gifted coordinator. “We look forward to the NFPA Competition and the amazing learning experiences which lie ahead for our students.”
Speech Language Pathologist Receives ASHA Award
Tracie Guggenheim, Chagrin Falls speech language pathologist, was given an Award for Continuing Education (ACE) for the third time by the Continuing Education Board (CEB) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
Speech-language pathologists and audiologists meet the ACE requirements by earning seven ASHA continuing education units or completing 70 contact hours in a 36 month period. ASHA encourages professionals to continue learning throughout their careers, beyond receiving their academic degrees, and recognizes those that do.
