The Ohio High School Athletic Association has adjusted its rules for high school pitchers, implementing a pitch-count rule to replace the 10-inning count rule over three days that was previously in place.
The new OHSAA pitch count regulation calls for a maximum of 125 pitches permitted in a day, and contains several other details such as the number of days required between pitching appearances based on the number of pitches thrown.
“Our initial goal was to meet the requirement of the NFHS rule that now requires individual states to create their own pitch count limitations,” said Assistant Commissioner Jerry Snodgrass, who is the baseball administrator for the OHSAA. “After assembling a group representing the necessary stakeholders, including a member of our Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, we have met that goal. We continue to look at further ways in which these limitations will affect teams as well as providing adequate education for our coaches and those in non-school baseball.”
Now, a high school pitcher will have to rest depending on how many pitches they have thrown.
Here’s the new breakdown:
Grades: | Daily Pitch Limit | 0 Days of Rest | 1 Day of Rest | 2 Days of Rest | 3 Days of Rest |
7 through 12 | 125 | Pitches 1 to 30 | Pitches 31 to 50 | Pitches 51 to 75 | Pitches 76 to 125 |
It will be up to coaches to track pitch count sand report pitch-tracking to the OHSAA’s data collection system. It will not be up to umpires to enforce the pitch limits during games, or from game to game.
