The Cardinal Huskies gave the Berkshire Badgers all they could handle in what was likely the team’s last meeting this season.
But a series of unfortunate fourth quarter events sunk the Huskies in their bid for the home upset, falling 60-53 despite being tied at halftime 25-25.
Berkshire coach Keith Clapacs wasn’t shocked by the Huskies performance at home.
“You throw out the records and everything else,” Clapacs said. “I know how much Cardinal has improved. I give them all the credit. I don’t think we played down. I give them the credit for the game they had.”
The Badgers struggled with Cardinal’s defensive pressure. Huskies coach Jon Cummins installed a new full-court pressure especially for Berkshire that disrupted the Badgers’ rhythm.
“It asks a lot of your patience,” Clapacs said of the Huskies’ defense. “We finished 7 of 22 from the 3-point line. And so credit them for that.”
The Badgers finished the regular season at 11-11 before traveling to Rootstown to take on the Rovers Tuesday in a tournament game that was finished after deadline. Cardinal finished 6-16 on the season, but definitely improved throughout the season.
Juniors like Luke Timas, Hayden Cummins, Parker Kosh and Robbie Mulh give Cardinal a bright future next season.
“This was a great atmosphere,” said Timas, the team’s leader and point guard. “It’s a great game every time we play Cardinal versus Berkshire. We played them better than we did last time. We had an OK season, but we’ll see how things go in the tournament.”
The Huskies played the No. 1-seeded LaBrae Vikings Tuesday in a game that finished after deadline.
