There was no mistaking the tension in the Newbury Schools cafeteria Feb. 20 when board of education President Maggie Zock picked up the gavel to start the special board meeting. The only item on the short agenda was under new business: a motion to discuss the direction of Newbury Schools. The crowd of about 80 included township residents and school students, administrators and employees. The unusually large turnout may have been the result of the board’s 3-2 vote Feb. 5 against placing two renewal levies on the May 8 election ballot until results from an independent financial audit are received....
