For three years there was no softball at Chagrin Falls High School.
But the story of its comeback — across all levels — is highlighted by a winning record for the varsity team.
In 2015, a group of Chagrin Falls players begged their friends to play so Chagrin could field a team again.
After going 4-16 last season, the team has started this year at 6-2 with three seniors, eight sophomores and three freshmen.
All this culminated in a NCAA Signing Day for senior Allie Kovatch, who batted .427 last season and was an all-CVC player.
A triple threat at the plate, Kovatch is a fast lefty slapper. She committed last summer to play softball at Denison University.
“It was difficult to find a softball team locally when I was younger and wanted to play softball,” Kovatch said. “I am so excited to see the enthusiasm for softball grow in Chagrin and to help coach the younger players this summer and share my love of the game.”
The Chagrin Athletic Association has stepped up to rebuild the youth programs.
“This season we will field six fastpitch softball teams in grades 1-8,” said CAA President Debbie Bargar. “That is a 100 percent increase over two years ago. Our desire is to help foster a love of the game of softball and help serve as a feeder program for the high school.”
“The effort and commitment of our girls and their families cannot be overstated,” said Sherri Konick, 14u coach. “Their enthusiasm and support has fueled this turnaround.”
