Sometime between Aug. 10 and 11, a person or persons broke into St. Edward Catholic Church in Parkman Township and stole thousands of dollars from a safe, according to officials.
“The persons or person unknown forced entry into a small … door, to into the church and pried open the safe and took some money,” said Geauga County Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand Monday, adding the windows of the door were broken as well.
The woman who called in the incident said the area looked like a disaster.
“The fact they obviously broke open the safe with sledgehammers and didn’t clean up afterward, I’m sure it was a mess,” the sheriff said.
The money was to be used to pay for expenses related to the church’s 10th annual chicken dinner and car show to be held Aug. 19.
“We’re following up on several leads,” Hildenbrand said, there were other break-ins in Trumbull County, including a recent robbery at the VFW post in West Farmington.
