Kenston announced that Derrick DeJarnette has been named the next boys varsity basketball coach after he was approved at Monday’s board of education meeting.

A 1994 Kenston graduate, DeJarnette is arguably the greatest player in Kenston basketball history. He was a four-year varsity starter and received many superplatives, including a McDonald’s All-America nominee. He remains Kenston’s all-time career points record (1,378 points) and career per-game average (18.1 ppg).

DeJarnette replaces Matt Vespa, who accepted a position as an assistant coach with Lakeland Community College’s men’s team in June. Vespa was 42-29 over three seasons with the Bombers.

Kenston Athletic Director Reid Guarnieri said there was a lot of interest in the job, but DeJarnette had the overwhelming support of the Kenston community.

“While we were certainly drawn to his connection to the tradition of Kenston basketball, we are equally excited to see him put a new stamp on the program,” Guarnieri wrote in a news release.

DeJarnette has 15 years coaching experience at various levels, ranging from youth travel basketball to the collegiate level. He was a Kenston junior varsity assistant coach before becoming a varsity assistant last season.

DeJarnette said in a news release his coaching philosphy was clear: “Have the desire to win; always give 100 percent, work hard and never doubt yourself.”

He continued: “I have so much love for this game. I hope that I can share what I have learned in hopes of instilling passion and love for the game within our players. I thank Kenston for this opportunity, and I am so honored to be home leading the Bombers.”

The Bombers open their season on Nov. 30 at the Greak Lakes Classic hosted by Cleveland Heights High School.
