FabLab at Burton Elementary

On May 7, Andrea Lane, director of the FabLab from the Great Lakes Science Center, visited all of the students at Burton Elementary School to introduce the FabLab and explain how each grade level will be participating.

A green house is being constructed on the south side of Burton Elementary, which will be part soil and part hydroponics. The students will use the Fablab to construct tubing, end caps, stakes, hooks and other materials necessary to sustain growth of their plants.

The green house will use rain and city water. A filtration system will be built by the students to provide clean water for the plants.

During the grades 4-6 assembly on May 9, Kinetico and Great Lakes Growers explained what they will be doing in the green house.

Berkshire has partnered with Great Lakes Growers, Kinetico and Geauga Growth Partnership to provide this exciting learning opportunity. The FabLab, which contains vinyl cutters, 3-D printers, lasers and a CNC machine, will be on site at Burton Elementary May 26-30.

The school thanks John Bonner and Tim Ryan from Great Lakes Growers, Edward Robakowski from Kinetico, Berkshire Special Education/Curriculum Director Dawn Nielsen, Burton Elementary Principal Mandy Randles and Georgia Klemencic and Tracy Jemison from the Geauga Growth Partnership.

Student-Athletes of the Month

Congratulations to Berkshire’s April Student-Athletes of the Month, sophomore softball player Shannon McGee and sophomore track runner Nate Millet.

McGee had a truly incredible month of April. Shannon played shortstop and had a batting average of .714 during the month. She had 25 hits in 35 at bats, scored 25 runs, had two triples, four doubles and 20 stolen bases. She has continued that pace in the early parts of May. Shannon has a 3.3 overall GPA.

Millet set new personal records in all of his distance events from the 400-meter dash all the way up the 3200. He also won the 1600 at two events this year. Outside of track, Nate carries over a 4.0 in the classroom.
