Landfill Wildlife
Experience the diversity of life at restored Waste Management site. The Lake County Recycling and Disposal Facility is a 195-acre site used for municipal and commercial waste from 1927 until 1993, when it was closed with a state-of-the-art vegetated cap.
Today, it is devoted to enhancing wildlife habitat, increasing biodiversity and providing educational opportunities via partnerships with Geauga Park District and the Gates Mills Environmental Center. It has been certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council as a Wildlife at Work site since 2009.
Join Geauga Park District naturalists to explore the grasslands and wetlands of this property, adjacent to Orchard Hills Park, and see how it has been naturally reclaimed by an amazing diversity of animals and plants, including bobolinks, bluebirds, rare dragonflies, damselflies and tiger beetles.
Wildlife of the Landfill takes place June 8 from 1-4 p.m. at Waste Management’s closed Lake County landfill. Access for this program only is by gated drive at 7166 Brooklane Road in Chester Township.
Registration is required. Expect carpooling from the entrance to other onsite locations. Dress for the weather with sturdy footwear and a water bottle.
