The Spirit of the Redskins

Dear Readers,

Hi! My name is Ariel, and I am a freshman. There is no team that I would rather cheer for than Ledgemont. We have a lot of fun at cheerleading practice, we get along, and we never have a bad day. We laugh a lot and work hard. Our coach told us at practice last week that she loves that we love what we are doing.

My favorite cheer so far is:  How ‘bout a basket, how ‘bout a score, we’ve got some, but we want more!

My dad is Ledgemont’s boys varsity basketball coach. I have two sisters and a brother. My two sisters are playing youth league for Ledgemont, but they practice at different times. My brother is on Ledgemont’s varsity team.

We have a pretty busy basketball day. After school, my dad and brother go to practice from 4 to 6 p.m. at the high school gym. My younger sister’s practice is from 6 to 8 and my youngest sister practices from 7:15-8:30 p.m. They are at the elementary gym. My practice is from 6-8, and when we practice at the elementary, I just stay until 8:30 p.m.  when my sisters are done, so our parents don’t have to take extra trips.

We are lucky to have people help with carpooling and getting everyone where we need to be since sometimes my practices are at the Montville Community Center and sometimes at the high school. That’s what is great about being at Ledgemont, someone is always willing to lend a hand. We all help each other. We usually get home about 8:45 p.m., and then I eat dinner and get ready for bed. We follow this routine almost every day!  It makes for a very busy week, but we wouldn’t trade it, it is worth it!

We had our first game this past Friday. When we got to the game, we hung up all of the signs that we made for the gym, and we practiced our routines. The seniors cheered for the J.V. game, and then we all cheered together for the varsity game. The sophomores and freshmen will cheer for the next J.V. game.  We performed our floor cheers between the first and second quarters of the J.V. and varsity games, and we did a dance at half-time of the varsity game. After that, we held a three point contest, where you pay a $1 to shoot a 3-pointer and if you make it, you get $2 back.

I love the fact that our team is always louder and has more enthusiasm than the other teams we face. It is awesome to be a part of that. We were definitely the best team on Friday.  Unfortunately, the boys did not win either game, but as we expected, they never gave up!  All in all, it was a good night of basketball!

We are loud, we are proud, we are Redskins and we are family!

LHS cheerfully yours,

Ariel
