Citizen Science in Astronomy

Dec. 26, 7-8 p.m.

Observatory Park

From mapping asteroids to classifying galaxies, there are dozens of science projects in which you can participate. All you need is a computer — no telescope required. Learn how to participate in “citizen science” projects online. Following the program, join for a view of the night sky through the Observatory Park telescopes. If the sky is cloudy, you can view the sky from the indoor planetarium instead.

Wildlife Detectives

Dec. 27, 1-3 p.m.

The West Woods

Learn of the many tell-tale signs of their presence, then head outside on a short hike to see what you can discover. Families will participate in several hands-on tracking activities including a one-of-a-kind scat quiz. Indoors and outdoors.

Sky Tonight Planetarium Program

Dec. 28, 2-3 p.m.

Observatory Park

Join on second and fourth Sundays for planetarium presentations about what to watch for each week. Building open houses are 1-4 p.m. If the weather permits, you might get a chance to view the sun using safe, solar-viewing equipment.

Wildlife in Winter

Dec. 28, 1:30-3 p.m.

The West Woods

Animals in Geauga County have different fascinating ways to combat the cold of winter. Bring your family and join indoors while discovering animal adaptations and strategies followed by a short outdoor hike to look for signs of active wildlife. Come prepared for the weather.

Nature Explorers: Bird in the Hand

Dec. 30, 10 a.m. to noon

The West Woods

Learn about amazing winter birds and how they are adapted to survive Geauga County winters, then make a hanging peanut butter* and seed feeder.

Conduct a feeder count and go outside to try your hands at the bird-in-the-hand feeding station.

Program is indoors and outdoors, so dress for the weather. This is a drop off program designed for ages 6-8 and 9-11. Registration required.

*ALLERGY ALERT: The craft will involve spreading peanut butter on a wooden form.

Grandparents in the Park: New Year’s Eve

Dec. 31, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The West Woods

Grandparents and grandchildren celebrate New Year’s Eve at the park with fun activities with an indoor Ice Age-themed exhibit and snacks.

There will even be a “toast” at noon. Bring snacks to share. Beverages provided. Registration required.
