Find Help Without Increasing Taxes

As a resident of Hambden Township and also of the Chardon school district, I find myself to be so very confused over the latest attempt by the school board to again lead the public into a huge tax increase with even more increases on the way.

I listen to the words they presented to the public. First of which I could not believe, they reported that trees were growing in the gutters. If this is true, then shame on them for not cleaning the gutters out. I have to clean my gutters and do that without a tax increase.

Windows that don’t open. Where and why don’t the maintenance personnel work on these things?

It appears that a lot of the building issues may have been pushed aside in order to gain sympathy. Why doesn’t the school board take the money they spent on the signs they wasted putting all over the area and fix the windows? And maybe even put in a little elbow grease and help clean those gutters.

I’m sure if they put out a “we need help call” they may be surprised on how many good people can find a little time to help without increasing taxes.

Congratulations Park District

I would just like to publicly congratulate the Geauga Park District for the overwhelming passage of its reduced operating levy renewal on Tuesday (Nov. 5) by a record percentage of votes.

Passage of the levy reflects the satisfaction of the majority of county residents with the county’s parks and the recreational opportunities.

The Geauga Park Board and the park district’s amazing staff, under the leadership of Executive Director John Oros, continue to work hard to preserve, conserve and protect the natural features of Geauga County and to provide outdoor recreational experiences to our residents of every age, every ability and at all times of the year.

Timothy J. Grendell
Judge, Geauga County Probate/Juvenile Court

Thank You, Munson Residents

Thank you, Munson residents, for re-electing me township trustee. Thank you to the poll workers and all who were involved in making the process of voting run smoothly. I pledge to work on your behalf for the good of your family, your neighbors and our township.

Thank you to all who carefully read campaign literature and got involved in a myriad of ways in the political process. Thank you especially to my anonymous supporters. Your efforts are heartwarming and make me even more honored that I am serving Munson. Our community is better off with your input and suggestions.

I wish all who were involved in the election process well.

Irene McMullen
Trustee, Munson Township

Proud to Call Geauga Home

On behalf of myself, staff, the Board of Park Commissioners and Judge Grendell, thank you voters of Geauga County for supporting Geauga Park District at the polls on Nov. 5. Issue 23 was passed by 66 percent of voters in the county. Since our inception in 1961, this is our highest level of voter support ever.

We attribute our success in recent years to our goal to make your park lands and the natural wonders of this great county more accessible to you, our residents. Our leadership has ensured commitment to our mission to preserve and conserve high quality natural areas. With your help, we have protected some of the most important plant and animal species in our area.

And we have successfully dovetailed these conservation initiatives with providing new and innovative parks, trails, lodges and recreational amenities. Our naturalist programs and special events are also reaching every age and every ability with new and exciting offerings.

We couldn’t be prouder to serve you and, as a 25-year employee now celebrating 25 parks that are accessible to our residents, I couldn’t be prouder to call myself a resident of Geauga County. We appreciate everything you do to make Geauga Park District successful and look forward to serving you in the future. Get out and enjoy your parks. They are here for you. Thank you for your vote of confidence.

John Oros
Executive Director, Geauga Park District

School Renovation Not the Answer

I want to share this recent exchange I had on Facebook. This question is in response to a September post about my general recommendation to take a tour of the current facilities in which I stated that “renovation is a non-starter.”

Question

Given the result from the recent Issue 21 vote has your opinion changed on renovation versus new? It’s important to understand your constituents and an overwhelming majority voted no on new.

Response

The rejection of Issue 21 does not mean that the community favors renovation over building new facilities. In my opinion, it means different things to different people. Perhaps some favor a different plan for new facilities. Some may not fully know or understand all of the complexities and costs involved with renovating the existing facilities. This problem is extremely challenging and the solution is not simple.

Obviously, the need to address the current failing facilities has not gone away. But no, the answer at this point is not to just move ahead with renovation. A renovation solution would still involve the same high costs, high contingency (for unknowns that will encountered during the project), difficulties with creating temporary education space (i.e., trailers) and, in the end, would result in facilities that still do not satisfy the requirement of current education methods.

The Facilities Advisory Committee will continue its work to devise a plan that meets the education requirements of today and tomorrow. This group consists of concerned Chardon citizens. I would invite you to participate and share your voice and ideas on the direction the district should take.

We do need to consider the concerns of, and seek to have an ongoing constructive conversation, with all of the residents of the district, with the hopeful end result of a plan that a majority of residents can support.

Once the committee comes up with its new recommendations, as a board member I will consider them, as well as input from the community, and make a decision at that point. Keep in mind that I do not actually join the board until next year.

Chardon BOE, Superintendent Have One Goal

The Board of Education has become aware of some misinformation in the community. Here is what you need to know:

When Dr. Michael Hanlon became superintendent in July of 2013 the district was in fiscal crisis after five operating levy failures. By November, we passed an operating levy. We were then catching up — with everything.

Textbooks had not been replaced in more than six years. (Cost of text books for one academic area K-12 is approximately $300,000).

We were facing mandatory state testing that required each student to have access to a computer. We implemented Chromebooks for all students. This was not as simple as buying machines. Wiring and wifi capability had to be installed in the buildings, and staff had to be trained to use them effectively.

In 2015 we began work on our five-year plan, Vision 2020, with input from community members and staff. Completion took several months. It was out of this plan that new buildings were proposed.

Saving money is a constant concern. Having four elementary school buildings was ineffective for teaching and expensive for staffing, maintenance and busing. Reconfiguration was designed to solve these problems. The savings allowed us to add our own pre-school (further reducing costs), to launch all-day every-day kindergarten in 2019, and helped to create our current positive financial situation.

After our last levy, a group of citizens, board members and administrators went to Columbus to meet with legislators to discuss inadequate school funding. Dr Hanlon went further. For the last two years, volunteering his time, he worked with 16 other Ohio superintendents and state legislators Robert Cupp and John Patterson to create a fair system of finance for all schools. The resulting bill — HB 305 — is currently in hearings at the State House.

This board and Dr. Hanlon have one goal: To give our kids the best education we can afford. This means having good teachers, inspiring and hard-working administrators, and a carefully planned and executed curriculum.

In spite of our deteriorating buildings, we continue to be in the top 10 percent of schools in the state, academically. Our sports teams and performing arts groups are top notch. Our students are graduating with honors and going on to colleges, careers and the military.

For the record, Dr. Hanlon has never asked for a raise. He typically doesn’t turn in his mileage when he drives to Columbus to work with the legislature and represent our district. He attends more school events than any other superintendent I’ve ever worked with. This requires countless evening hours for band and choir concerts, plays and sports (at high school, middle school, and elementary levels). He regularly donates to school events and pays for his tickets.

At the October 2019 board meeting, the latest 5-year forecast was presented to the community. Chardon Schools are in the strongest financial shape in more than 20 years. We believe that we will not have to ask for an operating levy before 2024 or 2025. This is not the product of waste and poor leadership.

We are indeed fortunate to have Michael Hanlon as our superintendent. This board and the school staff support him completely. We hope this information clarifies why we feel the way we do.

CHS UDL Implementation

Since 2018-19, Chardon Schools’ faculty has been studying Universal Design for Learning principles and implementing those UDL practices in the classroom.

The district’s debut of UDL was made possible last year when Ed Klein, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, together with Chardon High School Assistant Principal Ryan Bandiera, secured a $100,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Education for Innovative Strategies for Differentiated Instruction. The grant has enabled Chardon Schools to fund professional development and implementation of UDL in recognition that there is not a one-size-fits-all learning style for students.

The goal of UDL in the classroom is to remove obstacles to learning by customizing curricular activities and assessments to fit the individual learning styles of students. Megan Wessels, a Chardon High School math teacher in her fourth year of teaching – and in her first year with the district – is an example of a Chardon teacher who is implementing UDL.

“Megan is knocking it out of the park,” said Andrea Ryan, district special education supervisor. “For example, she had a student carve math notes into a piece of wood as an alternative to re-taking a math assessment. The student was engaged in the project and learned the skills on the assessment in a unique way.”

While Wessels said UDL can be a little overwhelming at first, she explained she started small in 2019-20 by choosing one unit or lesson per quarter, for one class, and built up from there.

“Along with the academic benefits, UDL is another fabulous way to get to know your students better and continue building meaningful relationships,” added Wessels.

Wessels has experience in teaching math all the way from sixth grade through high school, and she also works with many students who attend Auburn Career Center to connect their love for vocational training to the Algebra 2 curriculum.

“Megan has been a tremendous addition to the Chardon High School Math Department,” said Bandiera. “During the first grading period, she provided her students a variety of ways to demonstrate their learning by creating videos, wood carvings, and other creative projects.”

Together with intervention specialist Tracey Britt, Wessels has offered students a chance to display their understanding of parabola transformations in a manner of their choice. The teachers provided required elements and a project planning format, but students created their own rubrics, proposals and subsequent steps.

For example, students took the class on a wild adventure of sorts, to solve a problem before a “device detonated,” while another group showed off their craftsman skills by creating a wood-burning display. Another group inserted the content into a Monty Python skit, while other students incorporated essays, board games, development of assessments, or use of Kahoot!, a game-based learning platform.

“I’m always impressed with the talent, creativity, and comprehension that shine through with certain projects,” said Wessels. “It’s also inspiring to see students reach beyond what they thought they were limited to, simply because they have a choice.”

The second-grade students in NDES’ Challenge Program have been enriching their reading, writing, creativity and public speaking skills by participating in an ELA unit called Fraidy Zoo. The students read the story for comprehension and then retold the story in their own words to the preschool students.

It has been a special week for the preschool and kindergarten students as they spent time with the Sisters of Notre Dame and the residents of Notre Dame Village. The children spread some Halloween cheer as they played games, shared in crafts, sang songs and trick-or-treated through the halls.

Seventh-graders enjoyed their photography trip to the West Side Market. Students explored the market by taking pictures and then watched a glass blowing demonstration at the Glass Bubble Project. The trip ended with a sweet treat from Mitchell’s ice cream.

Hello from Geauga County Amish Country

It was foggy on Monday morning, Nov. 11, but it was not very cold. Our first snow has all gone, giving us a foretaste of what’s to come.

Our thoughts are with the family of Daniel and Barbara Byler. Daniel died of a heart attack the evening of Nov. 8, with his funeral being on Nov. 11. They have a family of three boys and four girls. Daniel has two sisters living in Richfield Springs, N.Y., and a sister living in Carrollton, Ohio.

The afternoon of Nov. 10, Dan and Sylvia and Timmy went to their son Danny Ray and Betty’s, so I went along and visited at son Mark’s. I picked a good time as their neighbors, Mel and Mary Ann Bricker, brought supper for Mark’s. They had barbecued ribs, stir fry, salad, rolls and dessert. It was yummy.

I’m watching my bluebirds at the feeder. There are five here. So, I’m guessing they are the young ones who hatched this summer. They love mealworms.

The annual Amish Craft Show on Nov. 8 and 9 was held at Buster Miller’s. They had a hundred tables or more with all kinds of different displays and a lot of local talent was shown. I even did some Christmas shopping.

On Nov. 12, sisters Edna, Fannie and Elmina, niece Ellen Hershberger, niece Barbara Yutzy and I visited cousin Sara and Lester Hostetler’s on state Route 534. Their daughter Kathryn recently died.

On Nov. 13, I planned to have a ladies day if plans held out. We only have a ladies day when school is in session and the ladies are not busy.

Emanual Hershberger had plans to come home from Burton Health Care once they have things ready at home for him. They needed to have a ramp built first. He had a very serious surgery several months ago. He and his wife Sara live in a trailer at their son Emanual and Martha’s. Mail and visitors would be welcome. Address is Emanual Hershberger, 16070 Newcomb Road, Middlefield, Ohio 44062.

After I finish here, I had better go and dig out the last flower bulbs as a winter storm is predicted. I only have one flowerbed to take care of. I only had flowerpots on the patio. It was a lot less work.

From Out of the Past: Nov. 8, 1899

As I was requested by many friends in Indiana who would like to hear from me, I will write a few lines for the Budget so they can all read it. (The Budget is an Amish paper written by Amish in all communities.)

They arrived in Geauga County from Indiana on October 22 and rented a house 2 miles south of Middlefield. I am now hauling logs to Middlefield for the picket factory. I like this country well and would like to see some of our friends come and see this beautiful country.

Two families moved here from Lawrence County since we did and several more from Holmes County are planning to move here in the spring.

David Coblentz was accidently shot last night while out coon hunting and was instantly killed.

Chuckles

The little girl came home from school one afternoon and said to her mother, “I wish you would let me take my bath in the morning before I go to school instead of at night before I go to bed.”

“What difference does it make?” her mother asked.

“Every day the teacher tells all to stand up who had a bath today. And I haven’t been able to stand up once since school started.”

The bride was a rather untidy housekeeper and knew it. At last one day she mustered the energy to give things a thorough cleaning. That evening her husband shouted from the hall in great dismay, “Honey, where’s the dust on this table. I had a phone number written in it.”

So much for cleaning the house!

Thoughts to Ponder

If you jump to conclusions, you may leap over the facts.

What you fall for is determined by what you stand for.

You all have a good week.

West G Teacher Under Fire for Controversial Image in Classroom

$

A West Geauga Schools teacher has been placed on leave pending results of an investigation after reportedly showing an offensive slide in an 11th grade AP government class.

During the presentation, which was about voter eligibility, the teacher allegedly showed an image with a mugshot of what appears to be a convicted felon on one side and a picture of animated character Dora the Explorer looking beat up and battered on the other side.

The image has sparked controversy between concerned parents of students in the district and those in support of social studies teacher Wesley Rogge’s teaching methods.

While Superintendent Richard Markwardt would not name the teacher in question, many students and parents have done so via Facebook and Twitter, several of them expressing support of Rogge and even creating a GoFundMe account for him, as well as the hash tags #FreeRogge and #Roggestays.

However, the district has received several complaints from parents about the image.

“I was outraged,” Stephanie Anderson, who has a son in Rogge’s class, told Fox 8 News Nov. 14. “Whether this teacher intended it to be a joke, something he found online, it’s simply inappropriate and outrageous. Seeing that white supremacists juxtaposed with a brown-skinned child who has a superimposed black eye, blood coming from her mouth with the offense of illegal border crossing and resisting arrest with 666 666666 is 100 percent inappropriate.”

In a written statement, Markwardt told Fox 8 News Nov. 14 the district is investigating the “politically-insensitive slides allegedly contained in a teacher’s classroom presentation.”

The teacher has been placed on leave pending the results of the investigation, he said.

In an email Nov. 15 to the Geauga County Maple Leaf, Markwardt said the district was responding to concerns from several individuals that some instructional materials are inappropriate.

“When such allegations arise, they are investigated and dealt with appropriately. That is the case here,” he said.

Former and current students of Rogge took to Twitter in support of him Nov. 14 and 15.

“I will stand by Mr. Rogge for the fact this man never forced his views on his classes and, most of all, he saved my life during my time @WestGHigh by always having time for students who were struggling and a listening ear. I am alive today because he cared about his students,” tweeted Sarah Graber.

Another student, @GrabinskiJulia, tweeted: “Just an honest, hardworking man trying to support his family and put his kid through college. He deserves nothing but the utmost respect, instead an individual student unaffected by this matter is singlehandedly trying to tear him down and ruin his career. We back you Rogge.”

One student is trying to coordinate a student walk out Nov. 18 in support of Rogge.

In an interview Nov. 15 with the Maple Leaf, Anderson said it has never been her intention for Rogge to be fired.

“That was never my intention. My intention, though, is to make sure that our classrooms are a place where children can come to learn without concern that they’re going to be ridiculed for their beliefs, or that they may be subject to images or conversations that are very clearly intended to elicit a specific response and that’s not a positive one,” she said. “I get being provocative, especially in AP government, I do, but there is a way that you can be provocative without ridiculing and alienating students.”

In her interview with Fox 8, Anderson said the classroom is no place for personal political beliefs.

“It’s not OK for either extreme,” she said. “So whether you are very liberal or very conservative at either end of the spectrum, imparting your views on your students in a non-educationally beneficial way is unacceptable.”

Anderson told the Maple Leaf she and other concerned parents only want Rogge and the school district to understand how upsetting the image might be to children and families.

“I want people to look at things with more of a critical eye,” she said. “I would really like to see Mr. Rogge be a part of the solution. I’m encouraged by the progress that West Geauga is making in terms of diversity and inclusion, and making sure students have a safe learning environment. I’m simply asking for their education to be free from ridicule. It’s not asking for special accommodations; it’s just asking people to have empathy and do the right thing.”

A email sent to Rogge’s school address seeking comment had not been replied to as of publication of this story.

CMS Hosts Inspirational Speaker

On Nov. 8, Chardon Middle School hosted inspirational speaker and Cleveland native Justin Bachman, known across the nation for his “Living Loud” presentation for students. The CMS PTO graciously funded the recent event.

Bachman, a Solon High School graduate who now works as a news reporter for Spectrum Local News in Syracuse, N.Y., was diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome at age 12 and had attempted suicide three times by the age of 11. In addition to Tourette’s syndrome, Bachman also suffers from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD; and dysgraphia, a learning disability that impacts the ability to write.

For years, Bachman has conducted school assemblies to share his message about his childhood experiences and how they have shaped his life.

“He was brought to CMS to talk to our students about acceptance of ourselves and of others, and tolerance,” said fourth-grade teacher Stephanie Seabeck. “This event tied into our One School One Book program from the start of the year where we all read ‘Rules’ by Cynthia Lord.”

Bachman’s “Living Loud” presentation delves into how his challenges set him apart from peers in childhood and his resulting feelings of rejection. In addition, Bachman discusses his disqualification in eighth-grade from a cross country meet because the officials didn’t understand his Tourette’s-related tics and saw them as intentional disrespect despite Bachman’s attempt to clarify that the movements and sounds were involuntary.

The athletic disqualification was a turning point in Bachman’s life wherein he recognized he had two choices – be a victim of intolerance or take action. He chose to take action. And that decision has served as the impetus for making a difference in other young people’s lives – to remind them they are never alone, to help them understand the impact they can have on others and to inspire them to embrace who they are.

CHS Presents on Circuit of Success

Students and staff members from Chardon High School provided an outstanding presentation on the school’s eighth-grade Circuit of Success curriculum at the Ohio School Boards Association Capital Conference in Columbus on Nov. 11. The presentation showcased the school’s eighth-grade Circuit of Success work inside the Principles of Leadership, Communication, Innovation, Problem Solving, Global Awareness and Entrepreneurship.

Presentations were provided by ninth-graders Alexis Jahnke, Maci Jahnke, Faith Kilfoyle and Sydney Murray in collaboration with high school teachers Jill Carpenter, Allen Herner, Kristen Niedzwicki, Holly Mihalek and Rob Mizen, as well as Principal Doug Murray and assistant Principal Doug Higham. The group also had the honor of presenting on Circuit of Success earlier this year at the Redesigning for Student Success:  Student-Centered Secondary Schools Showcase Conference in San Diego.

The Chester Planning Committee, the Chester Township Board of Trustees and representatives from Cleveland State University will be conducting a public meeting regarding a community survey for Chester Township at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 25 at the West Geauga Library.

The contract between the board and CSU was approved at the Nov. 7 trustees meeting. Led by Chairman Anthony Nastasi, the planning committee has been meeting regularly for over a year and a half to identify issues and gather data on the township. It has developed a list of questions for consideration, which will be used as the basis for the survey that CSU will develop. CSU will receive the survey responses directly from Chester residents, compile the data and provide the township a summary report of the findings.

The public is invited to attend. The initial meeting will be primarily discussions between the planning committee, the trustees and CSU to develop the survey scope, with a focus on the commercial town center.

For more information, contact Trustee Ken Radtke, Jr. via email at kradtke@chestertwp.org or cell at 440-488-7471.

Middlefield Village Council placed on first reading Nov. 14 an ordinance amending the village code to raise water rates for the third year in a row. Although the agenda showed an amendment to increase residential rates by 5 percent and commercial and industrial rates by 9 percent, when the ordinance was read, Mayor Ben Garlich changed the wording to reflect only a 5 percent increase for the business accounts. After discussions last Thursday with village staff and council members about what the village needs to net from the water and sewer customers to meet its obligations, it was decided a...
