Geauga County?Commissioners recognized Derwin “Dub” Hollis Nov. 10 for his service as a tank driver in Gen. Patton’s Third Army during World War II. Hollis, 93, was in the 497th Field Artillery Tank Division from 1942 to 1944 and has been recognized in a book about the 13th Armored Division for driving the lead tank across bridges in Europe — bridges that twice sagged into the river under the weight of the tanks, said Lucinda Sharp-Gates, who spoke for Hollis Tuesday.
