Inaugural Tech Conference

Early release Wednesdays are reserved for staff professional development, so on April 20, staff at Cardinal schools attended the inaugural Tech Conference as part of their training experience. Organized by the district’s technology team, staff had the opportunity to participate in several minisessions to discover new ways to incorporate readily available and easily accessible technology into their daily classroom instruction. Sessions were led by both fellow Cardinal staff members and other technology industry experts.

All staff attended a keynote speaker session led by Jake Miller, an authorized Google Apps for Education trainer and eighth-grade STEM teacher at Kimpton Middle School in Stow-Munroe Falls. He has led professional development workshops in other area schools as well.

“With the technology upgrades we’ve made in the district over the last couple of years, so many of our teachers are really exploring and taking advantage of the educational resources, like applications and programs, that are available to them to improve the classroom experience,” says district technology manager Jaymee Wittlock. “We felt the conference would be a great way to get everyone, district-wide, together to learn more about these amazing educational resources as well as exchange ideas on what they’re doing technology-wise in the classroom.”

Ohio Lottery Academic All-Star

The Cardinal Local School District is celebrating third-grader Frank C. on his selection as an Ohio Lottery, Partners in Education/Academic All-Star. Cardinal Intermediate School Principal Julie Fulton received word of the recognition via email on April 22.

“As soon as I found out I told his teacher Mrs. Cardinal,” Fulton says. “We waited until he was done testing to share the news with him. He’s been working extremely hard this year and we are so proud of him.”

The Ohio Lottery Partners in Education/Academic All-Star program is designed to recognize K-12 students who exhibit academic achievement, community involvement, citizenship and leadership in and out of the classroom. Students can be nominated for the award by school faculty, staff or fellow student peers. From the nominations, one student from each of the Ohio Lottery’s nine geographic regions is chosen to receive the honor each month. Cardinal schools is part of the Lottery’s ninth region, which represents the Lorain area.

Frank was nominated by his teacher, Mrs. Cardinal, who says, “Frank strives to achieve and learn as much in a day as he can. He is always on task, works hard and is determined to meet goals set for him.”

Frank currently has a 3.75 GPA, wrestles, plays football and was recently rewarded by school staff for his positive attitude and polite behavior in the classroom.

Along with a special Ohio Lottery Partners in Education/Academic All-Star certificate, Frank will also receive a $50 VISA gift card, Partners in Education merchandise and his name, article and picture on the Ohio Lottery’s website.
