Colonial America Relived

We are blessed to have our Geauga Park District. From July 25-29, Liberty Camp Geauga for the second year transformed Geauga Park District’s Camp Chickagami into colonial America in the War of Independence times.

Gathering in Yorktown, Philadelphia, Boston, Lexington and Williamsburg, 91 campers, ranging from first to sixth grade, were joined by 18 teen Patriots and 30 volunteers and historical reenactors, which included Sam Adams, Delaware tribesmen, Ben Franklin, King George III, John Paul Jones, Patrick Henry, John Honeyman, Thomas Jefferson, Marquis de Lafayette, James Madison, Minutemen, Paul Revere, Marshal Rochambeau, Betsy Ross and George Washington.

Each day for four hours, campers interacted with these historical figures. They learned firsthand about our founding documents, our revolutionary struggles to become an independent nation, snacked on period appropriate food and played games children their ages would have played in the 1700s.

Parents, grandparents and siblings joined the staff and campers at week’s end for a picnic, as the enthusiastic crowd totaling 250 heard America proclaimed as a free nation — The United States of America.

Liberty Camp Geauga expresses our sincere gratitude to Director John Oros, the Geauga Park District and the taxpayers of Geauga County for making possible the use of Chickagami. It is difficult to imagine another use of the parks that would provide the quantity and quality of education made available to so many young Geauga citizens.
