Elementary Problem Solving Tournament

Burton Elementary fifth and sixth-graders once again participated in the Greater Cleveland Council Teachers of Mathematics annual problem solving tournament.

The purpose of the tournament is to promote enthusiasm for mathematics among students; recognize students for their interest, perseverance and talent in mathematics and problem solving; challenge these students in an energizing and competitive setting; and celebrate community-wide the achievements of the young students.

The tournament was hosted in 14 sites throughout northeast Ohio. The students attended the host school at James A. Garfield Elementary in Garrettsville.

The tournament problems support and extend on the Ohio Academic Content and Common Core standards. Burton’s students prepared for the tournament by attending four practices after school during the month of February. They practiced questions from past tournaments and became familiar with the different rounds and timing of the rounds. The rounds included team members working together to solve problems, individual mental computation, a number sense round and a team construction activity.

Twenty-four students participated in the tournament. Fifth-grade participants were: Ashley Brilla, Autumn Ward, Shayla Grimmer, Sierra Tech, Hannah Espinosa, Mya Bargert, Courtney Czekaj, Jackson Hare, Samantha Pinzone, Carly Snow, Delaney Tucek and David Keough.

Sixth-grade participants were: Caden Neumore, Matthew Politzer, Erica Emig, Megan Filby, Andrew Young, Mallory Millet, James Klingman, Ben Wasson, Brennan Lanesky, Ryverz Durman, Kylie Kiggins and Erin Miller.

The Burton Elementary PTO sponsored the event by providing the funds needed for the registration fee. It also generously donated lunch for the children after the tournament.

Thank you to all who helped to provide a wonderful learning experience for the students.

They watched some of the games, learned about some of the participating countries, and then had their own Olympics. On Monday, they celebrated with their own closing ceremonies by parading through the school waving flags from various countries and having an awards ceremony. All three classes had a math fact olympics, poetry contest and spelling bee.

Medal winners for math were: Mrs. Starr/Mullet, gold; Mrs. Sherman, silver; and Mrs. Fiest, bronze.

Poetry contest winners were: Evania McCandless, gold; Anna Brown, silver; and Braxton Graber, bronze.
