After Prom Community Walk-Through

Parents and community members are invited to check out After Prom decorations at the community walk-through on May 20 from 8-10 p.m. at Chardon High School.

After Prom is an annual large-scale event hosted by parents to give kids a safe place to extend the fun and memories of prom night. Volunteers transform the high school into a themed event with activities, games and prizes for all juniors and seniors. This year’s theme is “Calling all Super Heroes.”

Envirothon Team Places 1st

Chardon High School’s Envirothon team recently competed in the Area II Envirothon in a field of 47 teams at Buffalo Creek Retreat. Chardon’s Red team won first place overall, including two station medals for Forestry and Soils.

The team will compete in the Ohio Envirothon in Circleville on June 12-13. If the students win there, they will compete in the North American Envirothon in Maryland the last week in July.

Chardon’s Black team took fifth place, and was only one point away from taking fourth. The top four teams advance to the Ohio Envirothon, and if another team cannot go, they’re next team up.

Team Red is comprised of captain Nick Schragal, Jason Tysl, Richie Wainio, Emily Munoz and Heather Humbert. Team Black is comprised of captain Asher Vokoun, Anna Monarchino, Jenn Vanderberg, Henry Martin and Drew Cressman. Team advisor is Marilyn Rohr.

Fifth-Grade Parent Night

Chardon Middle School will be hosting a fifth-grade parent night on May 22 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. There will be a presentation in the LGIR (large group instruction room) followed by a question and answer session where parents will be able to address any questions or concerns they may have about their student starting sixth-grade in the fall of 2017.

CMS administrators and school counselors will cover the following topics: introduction of administration and school counseling staff; basic information of CMS; what to expect as a middle school student; sixth-grade schedules; extracurricular opportunities at CMS; code of conduct and technology; locating important information at CMS; recommendations for parents of middle schoolers; and important upcoming dates.

Augmented Reality Sandbox

Students at Hambden Elementary School have been busy playing in the sandbox. However, it’s not out on the playground – it’s in the classroom.

Chardon is one of the first districts in the area to have an augmented reality sandbox, where student can see real sand transformed into varying altitudes on a map. The digitally enhanced sandbox, which is connected to a computer screen, allows students to move the sand around, thereby changing the topography of the map. Bright colors show the various topography of the sand. Students can pile the sand to create mountains or make indentations for a lake or river.

Researchers who developed the sandbox say there’s just no better way to teach how topographic contour lines work or how water flows over a landscape than building whatever terrain one can imagine and then seeing the contours and the water react in real time to any changes that are made.

This year, the sandbox is being used as part of the after school STEM program at Hambden. Next year’s plans include sharing the sandbox with the other Chardon elementary schools and also building the district’s own with help from tech savvy staff members.
