6th-Graders Participate in OCLRE Mock Trial
By: Chagrin Falls Intermediate School sixth-gradersJames Wilkinson and Riley McClintock
The 18 jubilant students of Mrs. Katherine Owen’s sixth-grade mock trial class returned in high spirits from the Ohio State Supreme Court on April 20. That morning at 6 am, they had boarded the bus, anxiously awaiting the opening ceremony of the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education (OCLRE) Middle School Mock Trial, a program that educates young children in the field of law and justice. These students had been preparing intensely for months.
“I will always remember how nervous and stressed I was when the trial happened,” said student defense attorney Tommy Brennan.
After a three-hour trip to Columbus, the trial started. The Orange and Black teams from Chagrin split up. The prosecution went first, going up against teams of seventh- and eighth-graders from other schools in Ohio. Both prosecutions faced groups from Garfield Middle School’s defense teams in a trial based on Avi’s True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. In this case, Charlotte Doyle is tried on the murder of first mate of the Seahawk, Mr. Hollybrass.
Riley McClintock, who played Charlotte Doyle, said that, “We were the only group of sixth-graders there. It was very challenging when we found out that we would be competing against people that had been doing this for much longer than we had.”
After the morning came a light and nervous lunch and then the defense teams launched into action. In the afternoon, the Black team squared off with Perrysburg.
“The best thing was being there with my friends and family,” noted Isabel Nerpouni.
At the conclusion of the Chagrin-Perrysburg trial, Tommy Brennan was awarded the Outstanding Attorney award. The Orange team defended themselves, once again against the team from Garfield Middle.
“They were tough. We probably should have had a confidence session,” said James Wilkinson.
Mrs. Owen said, “I am so proud of the way my students held up under pressure against eighth graders.”
Many thanks to attorney Thomas Perotti for sharing his time and expertise The students hope this program will continue in middle school to give these talented students another experience with OCLRE.
