Worldwide Math Competition

Fifty-two St. Mary School junior high students participated in the 30th annual American Mathematics Competitions 8 on Nov. 18. Students competed for both local and national awards in the contest, which covers middle school mathematics.

The purpose of the competition is to spur interest in mathematics and develop talent through the excitement of friendly competition. In 2013, over 150,000 students from over 2,300 schools participated.

Junior high mathematics teacher Julie Fedak said, “The test helps to get students ready to take timed and standardized tests. Our sixth-graders really improve their abilities by the time they enter seventh grade with this practice.”

The AMC 8 is an annual project sponsored by The Mathematical Association of America, which is located at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Mickey Mouse’s Birthday

Students from St. Mary School celebrated Mickey Mouse’s birthday this week with a Disney dress down day and activities throughout the school. Students contributed canned goods and food items to the church’s St. Vincent de Paul Society in exchange for a day to wear their Disney gear. The eighth-grade class led the way with spirit and dressed as 101 Dalmatians.

Preschoolers Visit Fire Station

Preschool and prekindergarten students from St. Mary’s Little Scholar’s program recently visited the Chardon Fire Station as a part of their safety curriculum. They were able to visit the inside of an ambulance, see firemen in their full gear and tour the station. The trip helped them be better prepared and have less fear should they ever experience an emergency and need assistance.
